Before downloading, installing, accessing or using the micron technology, inc. ("MTI") system scanner software ("software") or clicking on "accept", please carefully read this on-line system scanner software license agreement ("agreement") which contains the terms and conditions under which you ("licensee") are acquiring a license to use the software. If licensee does not accept the terms and conditions of this agreement, please do not download, install, access or use the software, and do not click on "accept". If licensee downloads, installs, accesses or uses the software or clicks on "accept", licensee will be acquiring a license to use the software in object code form only in accordance with the terms and conditions of this agreement, and licensee will be considered to have accepted and agreed to all the terms and conditions of this agreement.
1. License
MTI grants to Licensee during the term of this Agreement a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable and restricted license to use internally the Software strictly for the purposes of determining possible memory upgrades to Licensee's personal computer. No resale, relicensing, export, re-export or other redistribution of the Software in any way is permitted. Licensee acknowledges and agrees that it is solely responsible for the provision, maintenance and operation of all software (including without limitation all operating systems, web browsers, and network software), hardware, firmware, computer and telecommunications equipment and services, and all other third party products, materials and services necessary or useful for the proper download, installation, operation, access and/or use of the Software, and for paying any and all fees, costs and expenses associated with any and all of the foregoing.
2. Ownership
All right, title and interest in and to the Software, including without limitation all patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret and all other proprietary and intellectual property rights, shall at all times remain with MTI (or its licensors). Licensee acknowledges and agrees that no ownership interest in or to the Software is transferred to Licensee hereunder, and that the Software is provided to Licensee during the term of this Agreement only and strictly on a license basis as provided for within this Agreement. MTI (or its licensors) reserves all rights not expressly granted.
3. Permitted Uses
a) Licensee may:
download, install and use one (1) copy of the Software on one (1) personal computer of Licensee; and
make one (1) additional copy of the Software in machine readable format for backup purposes only.
b) Licensee is prohibited to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law from doing any of the following:
sublicense, sublease, lease, sell, distribute, rent, permit concurrent use of or grant other rights in the Software;
provide use of the Software in a computer service business, network, time sharing or interactive cable television arrangement;
transfer or assign this Agreement; or
translate, copy, modify, adapt, alter, reverse engineer, create derivative works, decompile or disassemble any part of the Software.
4. No Warranties
The software is provided "as is" and "as available" without any representations or warranties whatsoever. MTI does not represent or warrant that the software will be error-free, bug-free, uninterrupted, timely, complete, accurate or secure. Without limiting the foregoing, MTI expressly disclaims any and all representations and warranties, whether express or implied, oral or written, statutory or otherwise, including, but not limited to, warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, title, and those arising from a course of dealing, usage, trade custom or practice. These disclaimers shall apply to the maximum extent permissible under applicable law.
5. Limitation of Liability
The entire risk as to the download, installation, access, use, results and performance of the software is assumed by licensee. MTI shall not be liable under any circumstances or any legal or equitable theory, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability or otherwise, for any lost revenue or profits, lost or damaged data or any other commercial or economic loss, or for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, exemplary, punitive or special damages whatsoever arising out of or relating to the software or to this agreement, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. These limitations shall apply notwithstanding any failure of essential purpose of any limited remedy. Nothing in this agreement shall restrict MTI's liability in a manner which is expressly prohibited by applicable law.
6. Term and Termination
This Agreement is effective until terminated. Licensee may terminate this Agreement at any time by ceasing all use of the Software. This Agreement shall terminate immediately without notice from MTI if Licensee fails to comply with any provision of this Agreement. Upon termination, Licensee must destroy all copies of the Software.
7. U.S. Government Licensee
Any download, installation, access or use of the Software for or on behalf of the United States of America, its agencies and/or instrumentalities ("U.S. Government"), is provided with Restricted Rights. Use, duplication, or disclosure by the U.S. Government is subject to restrictions as set forth in subparagraph (c)(1)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at DFARS 252.227-7013 or subparagraphs (c)(1) and (2) of the Commercial Computer Software - Restricted Rights at 48 CFR 52.227-19, as applicable. 9. Governing Law
This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of Idaho and controlling U.S. federal law. No choice of law or conflict of law principles shall apply, and the 1980 United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, if applicable, is expressly excluded. Licensee agrees that the state and federal courts located in Idaho constitute a convenient forum for any litigation and Licensee submits to the exclusive and personal jurisdiction and venue of such courts. This transaction is void wherever such transaction is prohibited.
10. General
Any provision of this Agreement which is held to be prohibited or unenforceable in any jurisdiction shall, as to such jurisdiction, be severed from this Agreement and ineffective to the extent of such prohibition or unenforceability without invalidating the remaining portions hereof or affecting the validity or enforceability of such provision in any other jurisdiction. This Agreement sets forth the entire agreement and understanding of the parties relating to the subject matter herein and merges all prior discussions and understandings between the parties relating to the subject matter herein. No modification of or amendment to this Agreement, nor any waiver of any rights under this Agreement, shall be effective unless in writing signed by MTI.

Adding memory (RAM) to your desktop computer can instantly make your computer faster, increase system responsiveness, and make multitasking seamless. While upgrading your RAM is easy to do, it’s important to find out if your PC is capable of this type of upgrade before buying new RAM. There are also some important precautions to take before you begin the installation process.
When installing RAM, you need to be careful of static electricity, which can damage the components in your system. To protect your components and yourself during the installation process, you can either wear an electric static discharge (ESD) wrist strap or avoid touching any of the unpainted metal surfaces on your computer’s frame. Either method will safely discharge the static electricity that may have built up on your body.
You also need to handle memory modules very carefully. To protect your memory module, avoid touching the gold pins or components (chips). It’s best to hold the module by the top or side edges.
Now that you’re aware of the needed precautions, watch our tutorial or follow the steps below to learn how to upgrade your RAM.
To begin, clear your installation space and make sure you’re working in a static-safe environment. Remove any plastic bags or papers from your workspace. You can wear an ESD wrist strap for extra protection.
Next, you’ll need the following items:
There’s no need to back up your computer before you begin the upgrading process. Your files, documents and data are stored on your storage drive, not your RAM, so they will remain intact and unaffected during your upgrade.
To make sure you’re installing your new RAM as safely as possible, unplug any power cables. This includes any accessories that may be plugged into your computer.
Holding the power button discharges any residual electricity still in the system, which aids in the safety of the procedure.
For instructions about opening your specific system, consult its owner's manual. You can also take pictures as you work through the process to see where cables or screws are attached to make it easier to put back together.
Touch an unpainted metal surface – this is an extra safeguard that protects your computer memory and components from static damage during the installation process.
Precautions before installation:
Static electricity can damage the components in your system. To protect your system’s components from static damage during the installation process, touch any of the unpainted metal surfaces on your computer’s frame or wear an ESD wrist strap before touching or handling internal components. Either method will safely discharge static electricity that’s naturally present in your body.
To protect your memory module, avoid touching the gold pins or components (chips). It’s best to hold the module by the top or side edges.
Press down on the clips on the sides of each module, the clip mechanism will push the memory module up. You can then pull the module completely out.
Holding the modules along the edges, align the notches on the module with the ridge in the slot, then apply even pressure and firmly press the module in. It usually takes about 30 pounds of pressure to fully install the module.
Note: Some desktops require you to install modules in matched pairs (memory banks). If this is the case, the slots will likely be labelled for how the memory should be installed. If you only have two memory slots, don't worry about this - proceed with the simple install.
This is where your pictures will come in handy! Put everything back together. Make sure that the computer case has been clicked back into place before turning your computer back on.
Plug the power cable back in and restart your computer.
Boot up and enjoy a more responsive computer that’s now better equipped to run memory-intensive apps.
If your computer doesn’t recognize the new RAM, the first step is to ensure that the RAM sticks are properly seated in their slots. Open your computer case and press down firmly on each stick until you hear a click, indicating they are securely in place. If the problem persists, try booting your computer with one RAM stick at a time to identify if one of them is faulty. Additionally, check your motherboard’s manual to ensure the RAM is installed in the correct slots for dual-channel operation. If these steps don’t resolve the issue, you might need to update your BIOS, as older versions may not support newer RAM modules.
After installing new RAM, you might need to enter the BIOS to ensure it is configured correctly. One common setting to adjust is the XMP (Extreme Memory Profile), which allows the RAM to run at its advertised speed rather than the default speed. To do this, restart your computer and enter the BIOS by pressing a key like F2, Delete, or Esc during startup (the exact key depends on your motherboard). Once in the BIOS, navigate to the memory settings and enable XMP. This will automatically configure the RAM to its optimal settings. Save your changes and exit the BIOS to apply the new configuration.
See our article on What is XMP and How to Change XMP Profiles to learn more.
To verify that your new RAM is working correctly, you can use several methods. First, check the system properties in your operating system to see if the total installed RAM matches what you installed. On Windows, you can do this by right-clicking on ‘This PC’ and selecting ‘Properties.’ For a more detailed analysis, you can research third party software tools like CPU-Z or HWMonitor, which provide comprehensive information about your system’s hardware, including RAM specifications and performance. Additionally, running a memory test using tools like Windows Memory Diagnostic or MemTest86 could help identify any issues with the new RAM. Make sure to do your own research on these tools before using.
While it is possible to mix different brands or speeds of RAM, it is generally not recommended due to potential compatibility issues. Mixing RAM with different speeds can cause the system to default to the speed of the slowest module, potentially limiting performance. Additionally, different brands may have varying timings and voltages, which can lead to instability or system crashes. For the best results, it’s advisable to use identical RAM sticks from the same manufacturer with the same specifications. This ensures optimal compatibility and performance, reducing the risk of any issues.
Yes, installing RAM in the correct slots is important for optimal performance, especially if your motherboard supports dual-channel or quad-channel memory configurations. Most motherboards have color-coded slots to indicate which pairs should be used together. For example, if you have two RAM sticks and four slots, you typically need to install the sticks in slots 1 and 3 or slots 2 and 4 to enable dual-channel mode. This configuration allows the memory controller to access data more efficiently, improving overall system performance. Always refer to your motherboard’s manual for the recommended slot configuration, as it can vary between different models. Properly seating the RAM in the correct slots ensures that your system can take full advantage of the memory’s capabilities.
