    Internal SSD FAQs

    ?

Need some guidance? We answer common questions about internal SSDs to help you understand their benefits and how they can improve your everyday computer tasks.

SSDs are faster than HDDs and more power efficient as they have no moving parts. That performance improvement comes at a price, so SSDs are usually more expensive, though the difference in price between the two types of storage technology has lessened considerably since SSDs first came to market.

The average lifespan of SSDs and HDDs varies based on usage and environment. SSDs typically last 5-10 years, measured in terabytes written (TBW). HDDs usually last 3-5 years due to mechanical wear. Both can last longer with proper care. Check product warranties for lifespan indications and support.

Yes, NVMe SSDs are much faster than SATA SSDs, with speeds averaging around 10,000-12,000 MB/s writes and 12,000-14,000 MB/s reads, compared to 510MB/s and 560MB/s for SATA. NVMe SSDs fit in M.2 slots. Check available slots using the Crucial Upgrade Selector or Crucial System Scanner.

While NVMe SSDs do not always need a heatsink, you should use one if the quality of airflow in your PC tower or laptop is compromised, you’re overclocking or even if you just want consistent performance without the thermal throttling that can result from an overheated system.

Open Disk Management, right click the unallocated space on the SSD, and select "Initalize Disk." For more detailed information visit our article on How to Initialize Your SSD for Windows.

For detailed instructions, check out our guides on installing an SSD in a PC, in a laptop, Playstation, or installing an NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD.

    1. Typical I/O performance numbers as measured using CrystalDiskMark? with command queue full and write cache enabled. Fresh out-of-box (FOB) state is assumed. For performance measurement purposes, the SSD may be restored to FOB state using the secure erase command. System variations will affect measured results.

    2. Some of the storage capacity is used for formatting and other purposes and is not available for data storage. 1GB equals 1 billion bytes.
